Be ready when things don't go to plan.
Two ways to complete the Australian Sailing Safety & Sea Survival course - tailored for cruisers or offshore racers. Both lead to the same Australian Sailing certificate.
2 days · Practical training
Australian Sailing certification
Designed for cruising sailors, passage-makers and boat owners who may have to manage an emergency with only a small crew and limited outside assistance.
The course uses real incidents, practical scenarios and the safety systems aboard Sirens' Song to explore what actually happens when something goes wrong at sea.
2 days · Maximum 5 participants · $1,095 per person
Designed for sailors preparing for offshore racing, with a focus on the emergency procedures, equipment and practical skills needed when racing beyond immediate assistance.
The course combines practical exercises and realistic scenarios with the safety requirements of offshore racing.
2 days · Maximum 20 participants · $595 per person
Safety when it's just you and your crew.
Cruising creates a particular kind of challenge.
When something goes wrong, there may be no race committee, support boat or large crew to help. The people aboard may have to manage the situation themselves - sometimes a long way from immediate assistance.
With a maximum of five participants, the Cruising course gives us time to explore real incidents and work through the decisions, equipment and practical skills that matter aboard a cruising yacht.
Part of the course takes place aboard Sirens' Song, where we'll look at safety equipment as part of an actual working system rather than as individual pieces of equipment.
We’ll also practically demonstrate person-overboard recovery and consider how emergency procedures change when there are only a few people aboard.
Pool sessions provide practical experience with lifejackets, liferafts and survival in the water, and every participant will have the opportunity to fire at least one distress flare.
Duration: 2 days
Group size: Maximum 5 participants
Practical training: Aboard Sirens' Song and in the local pool
Certificate: Australian Sailing Safety & Sea Survival
Price: $1,095 per person
When something goes wrong, the response depends on a trained crew working together. Everyone needs to understand the equipment, emergency procedures and their role in responding effectively.
Designed for groups of up to 20 participants, the Offshore Racing course focuses on the practical skills and knowledge required for offshore racing, using realistic scenarios to explore how crews respond when things go wrong at sea.
Pool sessions provide practical experience with lifejackets, liferafts and survival in the water, and every participant will have the opportunity to fire at least one distress flare.
Duration: 2 days
Group size: Maximum 20 participants
Practical training: Classroom, pool and distress flare exercises
Certificate: Australian Sailing Safety & Sea Survival
Price: $595 per person
No previous sea survival training is required.
The course is suitable for sailors who are comfortable participating in practical activities in and around the water.
You’ll need suitable clothing for the classroom and practical sessions. We’ll provide details of what to bring before the course, including clothing for the pool session.
If you have any medical condition or concern that may affect your participation in the practical activities, please let us know when you enquire.
You should have a much clearer understanding of what happens in an emergency at sea, the equipment available to you and the decisions that may need to be made.
You’ll have practical experience using lifejackets and liferafts, surviving in the water and using distress flares. You’ll also have worked through realistic emergency scenarios and considered how people, equipment and procedures need to work together.
Most importantly, you should be better prepared to respond when something goes wrong.
