Is Watchleader for you?

Watchleader is for people who already have some sailing experience and are ready to take more responsibility aboard.

You should be comfortable moving around a yacht, handling lines and sails, and taking an active role as crew. You don't need to be an experienced skipper.

The course develops the skills and judgement to take charge of a watch, look after the yacht and crew, and make routine decisions while the skipper is resting.

By the end of the course, you should be ready to stand a watch with confidence and know when you need to wake the skipper.

What you'll learn

Over five days aboard Siren's Song, you'll develop the practical skills and judgement needed to take responsibility for a watch and the people in it.

  • Apply the collision regulations most commonly encountered while sailing
  • Take charge of a watch and manage the crew on deck
  • Understand your duty of care for the yacht and crew
  • Steer and handle the yacht confidently in open water
  • Develop your sailing and sail-handling skills
  • Use the chartplotter, radar and AIS to maintain situational awareness
  • Use the radio to obtain weather information and communicate when required
  • Prepare for and carry out anchoring
  • Manage lines and the yacht when coming alongside
  • Start, monitor and stop the engine
  • Understand the yacht's principal safety equipment and its use
  • Make routine decisions on watch - and know when to wake the skipper

The Watchleader Experience

Watchleader is a five-day, four-night liveaboard course aboard Siren's Song, sailing in Tasmania's D'Entrecasteaux Channel.

You'll live aboard for the duration of the course and take increasing responsibility for the everyday running of the yacht — sailing, watchkeeping, navigation, weather, anchoring, coming alongside and looking after the crew.

The course includes an overnight sail, when you'll experience standing watch after dark, maintaining a lookout and keeping the yacht and crew safe while the skipper rests.

Training is practical and hands-on. You'll progressively take charge of the yacht for periods of the passage, make routine decisions and learn to recognise when a situation needs the skipper's attention.

Duration: 5 days / 4 nights
Location: D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Southern Tasmania
Yacht: Siren's Song

Before you start

Some previous sailing experience is required.

Watchleader is designed for people who are already comfortable as active members of a sailing crew. You should have experience handling lines and sails, moving safely around a yacht and taking part in the everyday running of the boat.

You don't need to have completed Deckhand if you have gained equivalent experience elsewhere.

By the end of Watchleader

You should be able to take responsibility for a watch under the overall command of the skipper, looking after the yacht and crew while the skipper rests.

You'll be able to maintain a lookout, steer and sail the yacht, use onboard navigation and safety equipment, manage routine situations and make sound decisions about when to call the skipper.

You'll be ready to take your turn in charge.
