Enquire about Deckhand

Is Deckhand for you?

Deckhand is designed for people who have never sailed before, or who have spent time aboard a yacht but haven't yet taken an active role in sailing the boat.

You don't need any previous sailing experience. You just need to be interested in learning, willing to get involved and comfortable spending five days living aboard.

By the end of the course, the aim is simple: you'll understand what's happening aboard the yacht, know how to help and no longer feel like a passenger.

What you'll learn

Over five days aboard Siren's Song, you'll learn the practical skills needed to become a useful and confident member of a sailing crew.

  • Handle ropes and tie useful sailing knots
  • Hoist, lower and handle sails
  • Understand how sails work
  • Learn the main parts of a yacht and basic sailing terminology
  • Steer the yacht and take an active part in sailing
  • Carry out everyday onboard tasks and simple maintenance
  • Understand basic weather and how it affects your sailing
  • Choose suitable clothing and equipment
  • Cook, sleep and use onboard facilities comfortably
  • Look after yourself and contribute to life aboard
  • Take an active role during an overnight sail

The Deckhand Experience

Deckhand is a five-day, four-night liveaboard course aboard Siren's Song, sailing in the sheltered waters of Tasmania's D'Entrecasteaux Channel.

You'll live aboard for the duration of the course and take part in the everyday running of the yacht - sailing, preparing meals, keeping watch, looking after the boat and working as part of the crew.

The course includes an overnight sail, giving you your first experience of sailing after dark and seeing how a yacht and its crew operate through the night.

Training is practical and hands-on. Rather than simply being shown what to do, you'll progressively take a more active role as your confidence and skills develop.

Duration: 5 days / 4 nights
Location: D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Southern Tasmania
Yacht: Siren's Song
Includes: Overnight sailing experience
Price: $2,795 per person

Before you start

No previous sailing experience is required.

Deckhand is designed for beginners. You just need an interest in sailing, a willingness to get involved and to be comfortable living aboard a yacht for five days.

By the end of Deckhand

You should be able to live aboard safely and comfortably and contribute as an active member of the crew under the direction of a skipper.

You'll understand the basic operation of the yacht, be able to help with sails and lines, steer, carry out everyday onboard tasks and take an active part in sailing the boat.

You won't just be a passenger anymore.
